Google and Mayo Clinic Partner to Infuse AI Into Health Care - CNET
Google and Mayo Clinic team up to integrate AI into healthcare, using Google's AI technology to develop algorithms that predict patient outcomes and improve the accuracy of diagnoses. The partnership aims to streamline healthcare workflows by using the Enterprise Search in Generative AI App Builder tool to access information across multiple sources. Mayo Clinic's CIO believes this collaboration will have a significant and positive impact on healthcare delivery. Google's tools have the potential to unlock sources of information that are typically not searchable in a conventional manner.

I'm a former Google engineer who founded an AI startup. Here are the AI tech skills to learn and the tech roles AI will replace.
Former Google engineer and Nova AI founder Zach Smith believes that AI will automate many tasks and roles in the tech industry. This will free up people for more creative work and create new jobs in data science, machine-learning engineering, AI ethics, and design. However, AI cannot replace user-experience design and will require quality-assurance engineers to become trainers and operators of AI-automation tools. Overall, humans will not be replaced but rather shifted to more creative and less mundane jobs.
Optimism about AI is growing as more people use it, BCG report finds
A new report from Boston Consulting Group (BCG) shows that optimism towards AI is increasing with 52% of respondents expressing optimism and concern dropping to just 30%. The report also highlights the importance of data labeling and synthetic data in the development of AI technology. Additionally, a survey reveals that 46% of employees have experimented with generative AI at least once, with 26% using the technology several times a week. However, there is a significant disconnect between leaders and front-line employees in terms of AI use and optimism. The report calls for organizations to create spaces for responsible experimentation with AI and build responsible AI programs to ensure ethical and responsible use of the technology. VentureBeat is partnering with Midjourney to invite top executives to attend a conference in San Francisco on July 11-12 to learn about integrating and optimizing AI investments for success.

AI teaches itself Bengali: The black box and how artificial intelligence behaves unexpectedly
An AI system has learned Bengali on its own, which highlights the "black box" problem in AI. AI black boxes are systems where the inputs and operations are not visible to the user and arrive at conclusions without any explanation, leading to distrust and uncertainty in AI-backed tools. Experts suggest creating a regulatory framework and finding ways to look deep into the box through Explainable AI. The article covers a range of topics, including news in politics, science, business, entertainment, and sports. The Indian Express website is rated as credible and trustworthy and offers online classes for kids and information on term insurance.
Apple avoids "AI" hype at WWDC keynote by baking ML into products
At WWDC 2023, Apple focused on "machine learning" rather than "AI" and demonstrated the use of the technology in various products like the Apple Vision Pro and iPad. They also highlighted the Neural Engine, an accelerator for machine learning applications, and its use in improving dictation accuracy. Apple also mentioned the use of the transformer architecture for sentence-level autocorrections and personalized suggestions. Overall, Apple's emphasis on on-device machine learning showcases their commitment to integrating the technology into their products.
AI Poses Major Societal Risks, Says Statement Signed by Industry Leaders - CNET
Industry leaders in AI are warning of the potential risks that advanced AI systems pose to humanity, and calling for a global effort to mitigate these risks. This comes after the rapid release of AI tools by major tech companies and recent warnings from industry figures like Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak. However, critics argue that current problems with AI, such as data privacy concerns and "hallucinations," are not being addressed adequately by tech leaders. These warnings are important because they highlight the need for responsible development and regulation of AI technology.

Deepmind's AI Is Learning About the Art of Coding
Google's DeepMind has developed an AI system, AlphaDev, that uses reinforcement learning to improve C++ algorithms for sorting and hashing. This has resulted in small but significant improvements to the computing stack, with C++ sorting algorithms improving by up to 1.7%. While this is an important step towards more generalized AI coding, further breakthroughs in AI development will be needed for more complex algorithms.

The stock market could surge 14% as companies adopt AI to boost productivity and profits, Goldman Sachs says
Goldman Sachs predicts that the stock market could see up to a 14% increase due to increased productivity and profits resulting from companies adopting artificial intelligence technology. Companies across sectors could benefit from AI's development, but there are risks including predicting productivity gains and potential government limitations. The dot-com bubble serves as a cautionary tale of the consequences of not meeting optimistic investor expectations. The potential for AI to boost stock prices is demonstrated by Nvidia's stock surging over 30% after announcing demand for its AI chips.
'Late in the game': Sunak and Starmer in policy scramble as AI surges ahead
UK politicians Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer are developing policies on artificial intelligence (AI) as the technology rapidly advances. They recognize the need to regulate AI and ensure it is used ethically. UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Labour leader Keir Starmer will give keynote speeches on AI at London Tech Week. Officials say the UK is better placed than the EU to oversee AI development with broad principles. However, it is unlikely that the UK will become the home of a global regulator for AI as the technology continues to surge ahead.

Student-designed robot gives crop-eating insects' eggs the brush-off
Carnegie Mellon University's Robotics Institute has created the TartanPest robot, which uses a Ufactory xArm6 robotic arm and computer vision system mounted on an electric micro-tractor to autonomously search for and destroy egg masses of the invasive spotted lanternfly pest. The robot uses a deep learning algorithm trained on a database of 700 photos of the masses. The Amiga tractor has a top speed of 6 mph and a battery life of three to eight hours per charge. The robot is the team's entry in Farm-ng's 2023 Farm Robotics Challenge. The TartanPest robot aims to address a growing problem of the spotted lanternfly pest and save costs in the future.
